Summer Autocross 14th July

Local driver Allan Tapscott remains 'King of Sugworthy' after taking his third consecutive FTD at the North Devon Motor Club Circuit. The event was round 4 of the Competition Car Insurance Southern Counties Autocross Championship and attracted an entry of 34 with drivers coming from as far as Hampshire. Tapscott driving his Class E 16V Nova 1600 was the only driver to break the 3 minute barrier and also achieved the feat on all three of his timed runs.

In Class A for Economy Production Saloons, fellow Rallycrosser Gordon Rogers from Winkleigh, sharing Tony Wilson's 205Gti, set a time of 3 mins 11 secs to win the class and net 6th overall, with Tony Wilson collecting the runners up award ahead of Bournemouths Mike Stewart in an Astra GTE. Ben Byrom from Braunton just missed out on the awards taking 4th in Class in his Yugo.

Class B saw the Mini of Bournemouth's Andy Hoare take his third class win of the season, after Plymouth driver Phil Kempthorne retired his Mini on the second timed run and was unable to improve his time to challenge Hoare. Paul Rogers (son of Gordon) was third in class and picked up the Best North Devon Member award.

Reigning Southern Counties Champion Paul Dible (Salisbury), collected his fourth maximum points score of the season to remain at the top of the championship table, the Fiat Uno driver also finishing 3rd overall. Jane Dible driving the same car made it a family affair by picking up second in class and getting closer to husband Paul with each event. 16-Year-old Paul Baskerville of Bickington picked up 3rd in Class driving a Peugeot 205Gti.

Somersets Barry Pavey sucumbed to engine problems on his second timed run in his Escort, but managed to hold on to a class win after Peter Moorcroft (Chippenham) retired his Escort on the same run, Peter picked up a time penalty for hitting a marker on his first run, which allowed his Father Mick Moorcroft ( Farnborough) to nip in and take 2nd in Class in his RWD Fiesta.

With Tapscott taking FTD another Braunton driver Nick Webber took Class E honours with his hybrid Lancia engined Escort, just beating the Maestro of Robert Lundy (Weston-Super-Mare) by 0.6 secs with Dave Baskerville matching son Paul with 3rd in Class E.

Colin Anderson from Honiton won class F and finished 2nd overall in his 3 litre Special, romping home well clear of the 4WD V6 Sierra of Pete Donnachie (Weston-Super-Mare) and Tom Strover (Bournemouth) in a Supercharged Subaru Legacy.
