An encouraging entry of 8 teams took part in the second Treasure Hunt of the year - double the number that took part in the previous event - and after a long and taxing afternoon, we ended up with joint winners.

Starting and finishing at the Williams Arms, Wrafton enabled us to enjoy a carvery lunch beforehand (and very nice it was, too!) and the trio of Bawden, Drayton and Parker also took up this option. Obviously fuelled by their meals, they then cruised serenely around the route in Andrew's new L200 pickup, missing only 3 clues to score 61 out of a possible 64 points.

This score was matched by our resident top-team, Mike Reed and Sally Jenkinson, who actually missed 3 different clues but still shared the prizes nonetheless.

The route consisted of two loops around Braunton, firstly through Heanton to Windy Cross and back, and then through Boode, Winsham and Knowle. Much head scratching could be seen at Heanton Square, where a few clues were to be found on foot. In particular, a reference to a bus had many people stumped - in the end only 2 crews found the answer we were looking for on a padlock on the parish notice board!

Undaunted, first-timers Steve and Caroline Partridge managed to consume a reasonable quantity of company diesel on the way to an excellent 3rd place, just half a point ahead of Dave Newland and Margaret Galliford, with Les and Fran Deacon not much further back in 5th spot.

Another first-time crew were Ossie Down and Gale Gerring, who had great fun and performed admirably to finish in 6th place, whilst Fred and Sheila Partridge were forced into retirement as their car's engine began to overheat! Derek Drayton and June Liddy kindly telephoned me from halfway through the route as time had beaten them, but hopefully they, and many of the others, will be back for more next time?
