The latest round of the Club's Navigation Exercise series, titled the 'Spring Spanker', saw crews gather at the North Devon Leisure Centre. There were 5 novice entries - new member Andrew Holder accompanying Gareth Drayton; in the 'fossil' category were Robert Cocker/Arthur Cole and John Baglow/Steve Knight; the scratch crew of Bob France/Russ Drayton adding contrast to the entry together with the successful pairing of Dave and Chris Tucker. The only experts were father and son crew of Ben and Jason Byrom. The 30-mile route had straightforward
route instructions for novices but experts had to sort the correct order.
Starting at Brynsworthy, the first section, using the lanes around Westleigh
the towards Gammaton Moor didn't create too many problems but as the
crews tackled the difficult Huntshaw Mill section penalties started
to build. Robert and Arthur came to grief when the Alfa disappeared
into a pothole breaking a wishbone, and Ben and Jason struggled with
the expert instructions. The maze of junctions around Sherwood Green further added to the penalties and proved too much for Andrew and Gareth. At the final control Dave and Chris were the only crew free of penalty, but only just! Steve guided the evergreen John Baglow into second place with just 1 penalty mark. Results and awards were made at the Hunters Inn, Newton Tracey, and everyone seemed to enjoy the 'Spring Spanker'! Many thanks to all who helped with marshalling - we had 19 'signed-on' - an embarrasment of riches! Derek Drayton
