Navigation Exercise - January 18th

Epiphany Nav Ex

With the start at the Ebrington Arms, Knowle, 5 crews tackled the first Navifgation Excercise of the year. The rejuvenated Championship has a full calender, updated regulations and paperwork with the hope that this will attract more club members.

There were 6 controls and 12 via boards, the organisers were lucky to have so many marshals that secrets and give ways were manned. Control 1 was at the edge of Braunton then went via North Buckland and Spreacombe to the north of West Down. The route instructions caused all crews some difficulties with tulips without 'ball and arrow' mixed with grid lines and a handful of spot heights to confirm the route. A 'Devon mist' blighted the competition. At Control 3, Mullacott Cross, visibilty was down to 50 metres at best! From here crews headed towards Kentisbury Ford for Control 4, because conditions were so poor the route was cut from Conrtol 4 to 5. Competitors had a difficult final section from Muddiford using the tricky junction at Bera Down and an 'Ilfracombe Rally' special 'Long Way Round' triangle on the loop from Little Comfort to Winsham Down.

All 5 crews made it back to the Ebrington Arms, understandably with some high penalties. The next event on Wednesday 15th February will bring out more crews and hopefully better weather conditions.
