These two types of event are very similar in nature, as they both involve the competitor negotiating their way through a series of chicanes and 'garages', usually marked out with cones or tyres, following a pre-determined route. An event consists of a number of tests and each test is normally timed, with the winner being the competitor with the lowest aggregate time. Penalties are applied for striking a course marker or for not following the correct route.
These events are inexpensive to enter and provide an ideal first step into motorsport, as they can be attempted by anyone in almost any car. Many of the club members who take part in Gymkhanas do so in their everyday road car and, as NDMC events mainly take place on grass, the 'wear & tear' is kept to a minimum.
